Ghost, Spirits, Orbs and Haunted Places in Indiana

Stepp Cemetery

On March 29, 2008 we decided to go to Bloomington, Indiana to investigate the claims of the lady in black and baby Lester.  We got there early to get familiar with the area.  It was a chili day and was a little cloudy.  We found baby Lester’s’ grave. I was told that people leave money and flowers on the grave.  We did see money but no flowers.  Someone did leave a jolly rancher!  Bellame (investigator)had worn a bracelet that someone gave her.  It had a scripture on it about a guardian angel.  She became very sick, deciding she was going to take off the bracelet she started to feel better. Myself (Terri) decided to wear the bracelet to see if maybe she was right about it.  I became sick to my stomach and had a headache.  I also took the bracelet off, Wow I felt better!!!  Even though we had this personal experience, we only got a few pictures of orbs.  We didn't see a woman in Black holding baby Lester.  What we did see was a lot of people.  This place is very popular among ghost hunters and curious people every where.  We left early do to a lot of people walking into the cemetery.  Most of our night pictures have peoples’ flash lights in them.  People has destroyed most of the tombstones so there are just about 2 dozen or so left.  Please be respectful of the dead and their loved ones.  The photos of the investigation will be posted in our photo gallery.  If anything stands out to anyone please let us know!

The Coffin

Why is the coffin so haunted? Why have, for so many years, summer, winter, and fall, people of all ages driven through The Coffin hoping to see a ghost or apparition, or to have a supernatural experience?

Here are some of the Stories that have been told about “The Coffin” in Jackson County near Bobtown, Indiana.  Here are the ones we have found or have been told to use!

The legend of The Coffin goes back to the late 1800’s when insane asylums and poor folk’s homes found a better, cheaper way to bury their dead. No more having to pay $15.00 for a pauper's burial, and no more having to account for their number of dead at these institutions. They started bringing their dead to a scarcely populated area of Indiana known only as the Bottoms or Flats, later known as the Coffin, now known as Bobtown, Indiana.

Many times they dug shallow, unmarked graves barely covering the cheap pine coffins. Legend has it that because of unholy experiments performed on these poor souls, and, yes, because of cruelties, abuse or punishment, many were said to be buried alive.

In past years, when the spring floods would come, legend has it that old-timers would see cheap, decaying pine coffins flooding down White Creek. Many have claimed to see ghosts or spiritual orbs, like the old woman with her hand outreached, crying, or the little boy that likes to appear in the back seat of your car and then disappear when you slam on the brakes.

In the 60s a police officer busted up a party that was being held on a deserted
gravel road in Bobtown.  The teens supposedly killed him and placed his body in the trunk of a hollow tree.  The tree then grew around him and became his unofficial coffin.  If you drive down
this road at night you may see his eyes watching you from the trunk of his tree "coffin".  This road blocks all external light due to the coverage from the tree branches; so that the only light you will see on the road is your own headlights.
